Carlo Bartolozzi is an inspirational researcher and visionary who has made invaluable contributions to gastrointestinal and abdominal radiology.
Born in Jesolo (Venezia), he graduated from Medical School at the University of Padova in 1972. After completing his residency, he became Radiology Assistant at the University of Firenze in 1977 and Associate Professor in Radiology at the same institute in 1980. 10 years later he was appointed a full Professor in Radiology at the University of Pisa and became Director of the Chair of Radiology and Chairman of the Radiology Residency Programme
at the University of Pisa, a position he has held until today. From 1999 – 2007 he was Director of the Department of Oncology, Transplants, and Advanced Technologies in Medicine of the University of Pisa.
Carlo Bartolozzi's major fields of scientific interest are liver imaging with different modalities, diagnosis of HCC, and interventional procedures for HCC treatment. He has experimented and developed innovative techniques in the fi elds of oncology and gastrointestinal radiology, such as microbubbles in ultrasound, perfusion imaging in MSCT, and MR imaging of the liver. A productive writer, he has authored or co-authored over 270 papers and also published 12 monographs.
From 2000 – 2001 Carlo Bartolozzi was President of the European Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB).
In 2005 he organised the 16th ESGAR Annual Meeting in Florence, which was a milestone in the history of ESGAR, both in terms of attendance and atmosphere.
Carlo Bartolozzi has served the Society ever since 1997, when he fi rst entered the Executive Committee as Fellow Representative. He acted as Chairman of the Membership Committee from 2000 until 2003 and was elected Vice President of the Society in 2002. Consequently Carlo Bartolozzi was President of ESGAR from 2005 – 2007. As Programme Committee Chairman he was responsible for the outstanding scientific programmes of ESGAR 2008 and ESGAR 2009. His interest in liver imaging can also be seen as the ignition spark for the successful ESGAR workshop series on “Image-guided Ablation” and “Liver Imaging”.
His international reputation has gained him Honorary Membership of the Belgian Radiological Society and Austrian Radiological Society, as well as Corresponding Membership of the Swiss Radiological Society and Turkish Radiological Society. He has held invited lectures in over 30 countries. In 2009 Carlo Bartolozzi’s contributions to the development of gastrointestinal imaging were highly recognised as he gave the “Josef Lissner Honorary Lecture” during the European Congress of Radiology. Carlo Bartolozzi is Section Editor for Hepatobiliarypancreas of the Journal “European Radiology” and was EURORAD Editor for the Section: Liver, Biliary System, Pancreas and Spleen from 1997 – 2004.
He acts as partner of the EU founded project for the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR) and is founding member of the Erasmus Project Course on MRI (EMRI).
He also coordinated the University of Pisa research group in over 10 EU funded projects and over 20 Italian projects.
As members of ESGAR we know that Carlo Bartolozzi has not only a passion for radiology, but he is also a big friend of the study of history, art and music.”The use of radiological investigations in these fields represents a fascinating bridge between our profession
and humanism” said Carlo.
For his tireless efforts and contributions to the Society over many years and his outstanding achievements in the field of gastrointestinal and abdominal radiology, ESGAR presents the Gold Medal to Carlo Bartolozzi with gratitude.
